Quality Standards

ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) and IEC (the International Electro technical Commission) form the specialized system for worldwide standardization. National bodies that are members of ISO or IEC participate in the development of International Standards through technical committees established by the respective organization to deal with particular fields of technical activity. ISO and IEC technical committees collaborate in fields of mutual interest. Other international organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO and IEC, also takes part in the work.

In the field of information technology, ISO and IEC have established a Joint Technical Committee, ISO/IEC JTC 1. Draft International Standards adopted by the joint technical committee are circulated to national bodies for voting. Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the national bodies casting a vote.

Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject of patent rights. ISO and IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

International Standard ISO/IEC 15420 and ISO/IEC 15416 was prepared by Joint Technical Committee ISO/IEC JTC 1, Information Technology, Subcommittee SC 31, Automatic Identification and Data Capture Techniques.

All our verifiers provide two different evaluations:

  1. ISO/IEC 15420 (traditional - EN 797) which includes bar by bar measurements, quiet-zones, print contrast symbol, light margin infringements and check character errors;
  2. ISO / IEC 15416 (CEN/ANSI - EN 1635) which includes decode, symbol contrast, edge contrast, modulation, Rmin/Rmax, defects and decodability .

The ISO/IEC 15420 (traditional - EN 797) evaluation is good or failed.
The ISO / IEC 15416 (CEN/ANSI 1635) evaluation is:

ANSI A and CEN 4 very good
ANSI B and CEN 3 good
ANSI C and CEN 2 satisfying
ANSI D and CEN 1 not satisfying
ANSI F and CEN 0 failed

Table 1: Quality Classification in ISO / IEC 15416

Classification Rmin* Symbol Contrast ECmin* Modulation Defects Decodability
A = 4 ≤ 0.5 Rmax ≥ 70 % ≥ 15 % ≥ 0.70 ≤ 0.15 ≥ 0.62
B = 3   ≥ 55 %   ≥ 0.60 ≤ 0.20 ≥ 0.50
C = 2   ≥ 40 %   ≥ 0.50 ≤ 0.25 ≥ 0.37
D = 1   ≥ 20 %   ≥ 0.40 ≤ 0.30 ≥ 0.25
F = 0 > 0.5 Rmax < 20 % < 15 % < 0.40 > 0.30 < 0.25

* EC = Edgecontrast; R = Reflexion
